A trader profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro just before it was officially announced, raising questions about potential gains made from inside knowledge of American actions.

Sudden Shift in Forecasts

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a crypto-powered platform, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the close of the month rose in the time leading up to Donald Trump stated on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.

A single trader, which became a member last month and took four positions, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a starting bet of over $32,000.

It remains unclear. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Probability Spikes Before News Break

Market statistics shows that participants estimated the likelihood of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the afternoon of the prior Friday.

But these probabilities had increased to eleven percent by late Friday night and surged in the first hours of the next day, indicating a rapid movement in betting activity immediately prior to the official statement was made.

"That trade has all the characteristics of a transaction based on non-public details," said an industry expert.

A handful of other platform users also profited large payouts from bets on the same outcome.

Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies

Elected officials are starting to take note.

A bill put forward on Monday aims to prohibit government employees from participating on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a market.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Prediction markets have become increasingly popular in recent years, with traders able to bet on everything from sports outcomes to politics.

This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. But it has found a more favorable environment during the Trump presidency.

Trading on insider information is against the law in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market arena.

A spokesperson for another major platform said their site "explicitly prohibits such activities of any form."
