Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments from captain Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in several conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

But, after the opener made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead after three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is noise from the outside. There is no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
