The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
