A recent study suggests that individuals who stop using popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing these medications should be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a return to starting mass within about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Experts propose the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the accelerated rebound.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
People who have stopped the medication describe a powerful return of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch activating and you're instantly starving," described an individual.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians stress that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle management.
