"When are you interviewing Haim?" a text arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can become their extra sister."

There is only a key snag: The author likewise wants to be the Haims' additional sibling. Furthermore, we are far from alone. A host of high-profile admirers have also petitioned for the position.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their path performing shows at neighborhood delis with their parents. Presently, they stand as multi-time Grammy hopefuls.

Similar to the best groups, they're a tight-knit gang. Their visuals often depict them striding in sync down the avenues of Los Angeles. On stage, they perform with such boundless exuberance you find yourself thinking, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that young girls approached us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a drum kit'," states Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "It is the greatest honour. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage others to form a group."

"So anyone are welcome to be the fourth Haim sister."

Award Recognition

The trio are speaking from their homes, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in for their new album, I Quit.

They're right now processing the news it's been shortlisted for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering female band ever in contention for the award.

"I tune into the announcements every year, so it kind of feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I imagining things'?"

The weight of the accolade resonates with the trio.

"We truly set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge step," says Alana. "However we're just thankful for the women that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Humour

The project was born from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music inhabits that odd liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The lyrics follow departures and partings. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them working out in real time who they aspire to be.

"I love description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to make an effort in ignoring the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That newfound toughness required a different sonic direction – more raw and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our memoir," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Collective Laughter

The trio's candor shaped the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their dating horror stories.

Someone left Este over a medical consideration. Alana shared a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"When you're going through these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "Thus to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Future

One can easily sense a shift in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their place in the industry.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an international fan base.

However the sister act will forever be their top focus.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was a young child," says Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still going strong."
